Euro Convergence: Look for ‘positive sparks,’ says Klasen

Eric Klasen

A key organizer of RAPS’ Euro Convergence 2021 speaks to what’s new this year, how the conference is approaching hot-button topics in the EU regulatory space and how first-time attendees can maximize their experience during the live, virtual event.

Eric Klasen, of Waypoint LC Consulting, is a co-chair of the RAPS Euro Convergence 2021 Conference Committee. Klasen, with co-chairs Gert Bos, executive director of Qserve Group, and Sabina Hoekstra-van den Bosch, a regulatory strategy principal at TÜV SÜD, led the committee’s work over the past year.

In an interview, Klasen made the point that despite the many challenges facing the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, collaboration and healthy debate can spark good things.

“What we tried to do this year is to do it differently, and to see whether we can get some positive sparks flying around. And hopefully, then, out of one of these sparks – through an interesting debate – you can create a small flame,” said Klasen. Over time, he added, positive action can come from a positively framed debate.

Klasen made the point that as first-time attendees are building their schedules, they should not feel they have to stick with sessions that strictly match their current professional scope. Someone working in devices might pick up on a new combination products idea by attending a pharmaceutics-focused session, for example.

Attendees should comb through and select a variety of sessions as they build their itineraries, said Klasen. “Because the word ‘convergence’ says it; the world is converging. The regulatory frameworks are converging.”

Editor’s note: Focus will be providing daily coverage from Euro Convergence available through an attendee newsletter and on the Regulatory Focus news page.
