On 1 January 2007, Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union. Before their accession, the two nations had to implement wide-ranging political, economic and legal reforms, including modernizing their healthcare and pharmaceutical industries.1 This process was very similar to the procedures followed by the 10 countries involved in the previous enlargement process.
