New Head of Devices at MHRA

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced its appointment of Dr. Michael Rhodes as the new Medical Director of Devices at the regulatory agency, replacing Dr. Susanne Ludgate, who has served in the position for the last 15 years and is retiring.

Rhodes will assume the position on 8 November 2012, MHRA said in a statement. He specializes in weight loss, hernia, gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery and was previously president of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland from 2009-2011 as well as a member of the Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

"I am delighted to be taking this role at a time of great change for the Agency and looking forward to building relationships with the royal colleges and professional bodies as well as expanding the academic endeavors started by Dr Susanne Ludgate," said Rhodes in a statement.

Ludgate has served with MHRA and its predecessor, the Medical Devices Agency, for the past 21 years. In a statement said said it has, "been a privilege to work with some of the best healthcare professionals in the world," during her time with the agency."
