Director of Membership, Rockville, Maryland

The Director of Membership serves a critical role for RAPS in leading all efforts to recruit, retain and grow our global membership community. In addition, this role collaborates across departments to identify, develop and deliver programs and member benefits which enhance the membership experience. Taking a member-centric approach and leading with member stories, this position is responsible for defining and communicating our membership value proposition to the profession with strategies that raise visibility and revenue for the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This role oversees key engagement, volunteer and recognition programs including the RAPS global chapter network, organizational volunteer management system, Awards Committee and Fellows Program. The Director of Membership also manages an in-house team of member and customer service experience professionals who serve as the primary touchpoint for external RAPS stakeholders, ensuring that all members and customers have a positive experience when engaging with the organization.

Responsibilities include:

  • Drive long and short-term strategy for membership, chapters and volunteer management across the organization and lead the membership team to achieve organizational goals
  • Oversee the execution of innovative and effective strategies to reinforce member value and increase member retention rates; develop reports to track progress against target goals
  • Grow membership base by overseeing the implementation of new strategies for renewal, onboarding, and engagement campaigns
  • Develop, implement, and track operational plans and budgets for the membership and chapter areas and related projects
  • Create, monitor, and report meaningful statistical reports of membership trends and issues to the senior leadership team and cross-department partners to inform strategic decision making
  • Manage relationships with staff, cross-departmental teams, committees, volunteers, and vendors to achieve strategic goals on time and within budget
  • Prepare, update, and manage membership, chapter and volunteer policies and procedures; compile background and guidance information for the Executive Director and Board of Directors on policies requiring Board action
  • Supervise the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures for integrity of member related data
  • Develop and oversee execution of the volunteer management strategy, ensuring a positive and meaningful experiences; expand and diversify the volunteer pool, implement onboarding mechanisms, and execute appropriate recognition efforts
  • Manage chapter/affiliate planning process and help chapters/affiliates on development of goals, plans and budgets
  • Elevate awareness of RAPS and promote community engagement across internal and external platforms and events; reinforce member value by highlighting member stories and bringing their experiences to life
  • Explore internal and external opportunities to enhance existing member benefits and explore new ones
  • Manage the annual Awards and Fellows selection process and serve as staff liaison to both committees
  • Train and manage the day-to-day operations of the membership and customer service experience team, overseeing efforts to streamline communications and proactively identify and present solutions to common and/or unique customer and member challenges
  • Publish monthly and annual reports on membership statistics to ensure progress against organizational goals
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the department including budgeting, planning and staff development
        Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Supervises three direct reports (total in-house staff of four) with the potential for additional staff as team grows (based on need/opportunity)
  • Manages outside vendors as needed

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

Required Skills/Technical Experience:

  • 8+ years of association membership leadership experience
  • Demonstrated success in membership growth and retention strategy development and implementation
  • Strong interest and skills in working in a cross-functional team environment
  • Executive presence and dynamic professional style that inspires confidence internally and externally
  • Ability to develop and interpret qualitative and quantitative data
  • Experience and skills in guiding/mentoring and supervising staff and volunteers
  • Keen ability to cultivate and grow relationships/partnerships
  • Member-focused, service-oriented approach to dealing with external stakeholders
  • Excellent internal/external written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong budget management, project management and analytical skills

  • Experience and skills in guiding/mentoring and supervising staff and volunteers
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; demonstrated expertise with membership service tools and technology; familiarity with Impexium AMS, Power BI and/or database/analytics systems preferred
  • Association/nonprofit and/or regulatory/health-science experience preferred

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and experience which demonstrates the necessary skills and expertise required for the position
  • MBA and/or CAE preferred.
