ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The News Editor is responsible for original reporting for daily news articles with emphasis on regulatory news and intelligence gathering.  The news editor’s content will appear on the Regulatory Focus website and in Regulatory Focus   Today, the weekday newsletter sent to over 30,000 regulatory affairs professionals and others interested in US, European and international biopharmaceutical and medical device regulatory news.

Regulatory Focus is the flagship, independent online publication of the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society (RAPS), the largest global organization of and for those involved with the regulation of healthcare and related products, including medical devises, pharmaceuticals, biologics and nutritional products.  We are the only source of timely, quality regulatory news, information and analysis that is fully dedicated to covering regulatory issues associated with healthcare products and the regulatory profession.

Responsibilities include:

  • Through original reporting and research, write and publish accurate and insightful daily news articles, working on tight deadlines and gathering global news.
  • Develop and maintain sources within regulatory, industry and academia to be interviewed for insight and commentary to incorporate into articles; stay abreast of evolving regulatory, general policy and health news that has relevance to regulatory professionals, with an emphasis on the US and Europe.
  • Report and prepare Regulatory Reconnaissance, a weekday regulatory intelligence resource that curates global regulatory news.
  • At the direction of the Managing Editor, attend and report from FDA hearings and advisory committee meetings, legislative and policy forums, and other regulatory and medical conferences and events.
  • At the direction of the Managing Editor, work with graphic artists and the Senior Editor on the creation of compelling graphics and visualizations to augment news offerings.
  • Support other editorial and communications activities of the organization as appropriate.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

This position requires a keen eye for news, superior internet skills and strong writing and journalistic skills with the ability to complete highly technical reporting on tight deadlines.

Qualifications include:

  • 2-3 years professional writing experience; pharmaceutical, medical device or biotech experience desired.
  • Experience editing using professional style standards (i.e., AP Stylebook, AMA Manual of Style or Chicago Manual of Style) as well as the ability to quickly familiarize self with RAPS style book.
  • Experience with web editing and RSS tools, or ability to learn these technical skills quickly.
  • Schedule flexibility to accommodate deadlines and global news cycle.
  • Comfort working in a team setting with internal staff and external partners under tight deadlines
  • Undergraduate degree in journalism, English, public policy, political science or related.
