The Senior Editor of Regulatory Focus is responsible for the strategic and editorial management of author-driven content for RAPS' flagship online publication, Regulatory Focus. The Regulatory Focus senior editor works closely with an Editorial Advisory Committee and manages relationships with volunteer authors, editorial partners, freelance writers, and copy editors, producing valuable content and insight as an exclusive benefit for RAPS members. The senior editor is a key part of the Regulatory Focus editorial team, which produces original daily news, curated news, author-driven articles and in-depth analyses for RAPS members and subscribers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The senior editor will be required to:
  • Organize, supervise and manage all author-created article content submitted for Regulatory Focus.
  • Work closely with a volunteer Editorial Advisory Committee (EAC), including EAC structure, roles, responsibilities and governance.
  • Oversee the development of annual editorial calendar; set and manage deadlines
  • Supervise article solicitation and solicitation processes.
  • Evaluate manuscripts, organize expert review process and track workflow
  • Liaison between authors and EAC; compare editorial changes against author changes; assist in resolving differences regarding structure, form and grammar; advise authors on schedule, revisions and related matters
  • Create and implement strategies to broaden Regulatory Focus content dissemination to RAPS members, the global regulatory community and general public
  • Maintain understanding and awareness of the global regulatory environment; track competitor developments
  • Maintain up-to-date general knowledge of FDA, EMA and key global agency guidances and regulations
  • Help expand Regulatory Focus’ reach; be a key member of RAPS’ content strategy team seeking to enhance the strength of its content
  • Align integrated communications to effectively engage RAPS members (and the regulatory community as a whole) to meet their information needs; work closely with all teams
  • Prepare operational reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions
  • Leverage social media to expand reach and drive readership
  • Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds for professional services
  • Contribute news articles to Regulatory Focus as required
  • Support other editorial and communications activities of the organization as appropriate
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • College degree in journalism, communications, English or health policy (or related)
  • 6+ years experience in editing, writing, and editorial management 
  • Experience with a pharmaceutical, medical device or biotech publication is desired.
  • Medical writing background is a plus
  • Experience managing and tracking commissioned and submitted papers
  • Experience with web editing/content management tools
  • Experience editing and writing to house style
  • Comfort working both in a team setting and independently
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized.
  • Curiosity and creativity
 
  • The ideal candidate will also be familiar with the following:
    • Associated Press and AMA style manuals
    • Medical and science terminology
    • InDesign or other layout production software
