This senior editor manages all editorial and content development responsibilities for RAPS publications and related resources. He or she serves as a key member of the organization’s Education and Professional Development team and works to grow and enhance the product line of the organization’s online store.
 
The senior editor, in collaboration with the Editorial Advisory Committee (EAC) and Project Manager, Content and Publishing, manages all aspects of the strategy, planning, content development, manuscript management, writing and editing of RAPS publications, including quality controls. The senior editor works with the graphic designer on production of each publication.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
The senior editor will be required to:
  • Serve as lead editor on the Fundamentals of Regulatory Affairs series, acronym guides, compilation pieces and topical books
  • Organize, supervise and participate in the management and development of all copy submitted for RAPS publications; work with an appointed Editorial Advisory Committee on the development of the annual production calendar; set and enforce deadlines for copy
  • Evaluate manuscripts; supervise the submission process and tracking system
  • Maintain liaison between authors and the Editorial Advisory Committee; compare editorial changes against the author changes; assist in resolving differences regarding structure, form and grammar; advise authors on schedule, revisions and related matters
  • Research and implement new publications and resources on topics of interest to RAPS members and the global regulatory community; including both RAPS-published and co-published publications; establishing positive business cases for each new publication
  • Liaise with external organizations for possible co-promotion of books and other media to address specific topics identified by the appropriate internal channels
  • Consult with the designer on all aspects of layout, design, printing and production logistics; supervise work of editorial freelancers
  • Implement and manage system to ensure a thorough legal review of published materials; acquire all necessary permissions dictated by legal counsel
  • Support project manager, content and publishing in the revenue and expense budgeting process for publications products sold in the RAPS Store.
  • Evaluate content published in Regulatory Focus and/or RAPS educational channels for possible inclusion in publications sold by the RAPS Store
  • Support other editorial and communications activities of the organization, as appropriate.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or other publishing-related area
  • Eight to 10 years of managing editor, copyediting and/or print production experience
  • Strong team management and interpersonal skills
  • Thorough understanding of the print and electronic publication production processes
  • Solid project management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
 
  • The ideal candidate will also be familiar with the following:
    • Associated Press and AMA style manuals
    • Medical and science terminology
    • InDesign or other layout production software
