About the Exam

Key Exam Facts:

  • Each exam has 40 questions based on the following:
    • 40% of the questions will be about pharmaceuticals or medical devices
    • 30% are about regulations in the US & Canada
    • 30% about regulations in Europe
  • All questions are multiple-choice. View sample questions.
  • You have five attempts to pass the exam. If you do not pass, you may purchase the re-take exam where you will have five more attempts to pass.
  • You will have 60 minutes to complete your exam on each attempt.
  • Materials may NOT be used during the exam. You will need to sign an honor agreement before taking the exam that says you promise not to receive (or provide) any assistance during the exam session.

All exam questions are written based on the learning objectives and key concepts covered in these courses. While you are not required to complete the courses to take the exam, they are the recommended study materials and the best way to prepare.

FRA – Introduction to Medical Devices

  • Medical Devices: Definition & Lifecycle
    • Provide the definition of “medical device”
    • Describe how medical devices are classified
    • Outline the activities within a medical device’s lifecycle phases
    • Discuss different types of medical device marketing authorizations
  • Introduction to Regulatory Affairs in the US & Canada
    • Identify the organizations involved in the US and Canadian regulatory system, how they are organized and the products they regulate
    • Recognize the regulatory instruments—acts, regulations and/or guidances — and how they are applied
    • Outline the basic regulatory processes used by FDA and Health Canada
    • Identify peripheral agencies outside FDA and Health Canada involved in governing healthcare products
  • Introduction to Regulatory Affairs in the EU
    • Describe the origins of the EU regulatory system
    • Identify the organizations involved in the EU regulatory system
    • Outline the regulatory processes associated with various healthcare products in the EU
    • Distinguish between EU processes for region-wide approval and country-specific approval

FRA – Introduction to Pharmaceuticals

  • Pharmaceuticals: Definition & Lifecycle
    • Define basic pharmaceutical terminology
    • Identify the key stages in the pharmaceutical product lifecycle, including nonclinical development, regulation of clinical trials, safety issues, marketing approval applications and postmarketing activities
    • Describe the general regulatory requirements relating to good manufacturing practice and marketing
  • Introduction to Regulatory Affairs in the US & Canada
    • Identify the organizations involved in the US and Canadian regulatory system, how they are organized and the products they regulate
    • Recognize the regulatory instruments—acts, regulations and/or guidances — and how they are applied
    • Outline the basic regulatory processes used by FDA and Health Canada

Register for the Exam

There are multiple ways to purchase the FRA exam. Choose the option that best fits your learning goals:

Take the Exam

The exam is offered online through the RAPS Learning Portal. After you register, the exam will be available in the Learning Portal. You choose the day and time to take your exam. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You do NOT need to schedule your time in advance. Login, sign the honor agreement, and begin your exam.

Results & Recognition

Pass/Fail Notification

Your results will be available immediately after completing your exam.

FRA Recognition and Use of Designation

Candidates who pass the exam will receive a digital badge and certificate.

While you cannot use the letters "FRA" after your name, you can reference earning the FRA credential on your resume.

Your FRA credential does not expire, and there are no renewal requirements.
