Construction Begins on New EMA Headquarters
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) on Tuesday said that construction of its new headquarters in Amsterdam is set to be completed on schedule in November 2019.The announcement comes after EMA Executive Director Guido Rasi attended a ceremony on Monday celebrating the laying of the new building’s foundation.
EMA says it has been working closely with the Netherlands to ensure it can be operational by 30 March 2019, when the UK will official exit the EU.
Because the new headquarters will still be under construction at that time, EMA will temporarily resettle into the Spark building in Amsterdam, which the agency will have access to beginning 1 January 2019.
Though the new headquarters is expected to be fully operational in November 2019, EMA says it will take until the end of 2019 to finish moving employees out of the temporary office.
In preparation for the move next year, EMA and the Netherlands have also finalized an agreement detailing how the agency and its employees will be treated by the Dutch government once they relocate. According to the agency, the agreement “ensures that EMA can function properly and independently in the Netherlands.”
