FDA Looks to Hire New CIO, CFSAN Compliance Director
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced it is searching for a new chief information officer (CIO) to run technology operations at the agency, as well as a permanent director of its Office of Compliance (OC) for its Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN).
CIO Position
FDA has gone through several CIOs in recent years as it has struggled to upgrade its technology platforms in light of an increasingly global workforce, hacking attempts, new statutory requirements under the FDA Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA) and a series of major cost overruns.
The most recent IT chief, Eric Perakslis, left the agency in March 2013 after only joining the agency in October 2011 from Johnson & Johnson after Lori Davis, FDA's previous CIO, left the agency.
Now FDA is looking to hire a new CIO, the agency said in a posting on a government job board. The position calls for someone with a degree in one of seven technology fields, as well as the skills necessary to acquire and manage various IT resources.
CFSAN Position
The CFSAN position, meanwhile, is far more focused on the regulatory operations of FDA than the CIO position. CFSAN is charged with regulating many food products, including some regulated healthcare products such as dietary supplements.
CFSAN's OC deals with a "diverse" range of products, explains FDA's posting on the government job board. Like most compliance centers within FDA, any hired director will need to be focused on real and potential violations of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), with frequent recalls, injunctions, seizures, prosecutions and enforcement letters.
The job is currently held on an acting basis by Michael Roosevelt, according to FDA.
