MHRA Warns of Counterfeit Medical Devices
The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) sent out a warning to physicians and consumers on 15 June regarding the discovery and seizure of several counterfeit medical devices sold through online retailers.
The agency said it had seized more than 400 discount-priced digital thermometers lacking proper CE safety marking, warnings or instructions for proper use. Further, the devices were discovered to be dispensing improper temperature results, and the agency said at least one patient had required urgent hospitalization after sustaining a prolonged fever.
The raid also netted several other fake medical devices during its raid on the facility containing the thermometers, including temperature cooling pads and a device intended to "tone" abdominal musculature. As part of its investigation into the marketing and sale of the devices, which MHRA discovered were being sold online via the auctioning website eBay, regulatory authorities said they were working with online vendors to prevent unapproved medical devices from being sold on the website in the future.
The agency said its investigation into the products' origins and sale is "ongoing."
