NICE Unveils Mobile Prescribing App to Keep Healthcare Professionals Up-to-date
Physicians could soon be dispensing more accurate and up-to-date prescriptions in Britain thanks to a new mobile medical application from the British National Formulary (BNF) and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
The organizations announced on 13 June the launch of a new application capable of running on both Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems which comprise much of the mobile phone market across the world.
In a statement, NICE said the applications "will transform the way people access the BNF-the most widely-used medicines resource within the National Health Service (NHS)."
The application can be used either with or without access to the internet, though it requires internet access to update its information and remain up-to-date.
The application raises the possibility of regulatory professionals being able to send out rapid updates regarding changes in the safety profile or contraindications for a drug product in the near future. "The growing use of smartphones has created a new culture and means for people to access information while on the move," said NHS Secretary Sir Andrew Dillon.
Users will be required to register with the NHS Athens system, which is free for all eligible healthcare professionals.
