Poll: More Than Half of Americans Favor Increased Regulatory Authority for States

A poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports finds a slim majority of Americans are in favor of increasing the authority given to states to overrule a decision made by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Rasmussen's poll, released 19 May, surveyed 1,000 likely voters across the US and had a margin of error of +/- 3% (95% Confidence Interval).

The survey found 52% of respondents in favor of the statement:

"Suppose the Food and Drug Administration denies approval for a particular drug. If a state government believes the drug has benefits in some circumstances, should the state be able to approve the sale of that drug in that state?"

Thirty-two percent of respondents disagreed with the statement, while 16% were unsure.

Respondent's replies may have been influenced due to the poll's other questions, which focused largely on their views regarding the legalization of many drug substances, including marijuana and cocaine.
