EMA plans major revamp of regulatory website

Users navigating the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) website next week should not be alarmed if they notice no updates to the site. The agency said it will pause its site next week in preparation for a major relaunch on 5 December 2023.

While the website is paused, users will still be able to access important regulatory documents, but no new documents or updates to the site will be available.

EMA is doing a major overhaul of its website, which is used by a wide range of stakeholders to access important regulatory information, according to a 9 November statement. The agency said the new website will have a “fresh look and feel,” and incorporate new features, such as a simpler drug search function, better navigation and a revamped “What’s New Page” that lists the latest updates to the site.

“To ensure the success of the relaunch, EMA needs to freeze the content on the website next week - from Tuesday to Friday, inclusive,” EMA said in its statement. “This means that there will be no new or updated content published on the website during these four days.”

The agency plans to resume normal operations on 20 November, and the website’s users should see a revamped site starting 5 December.

“All of the content on the current website will remain available, including its information on medicines,” said EMA. “This means that all of the current website’s addresses (URLs) will work after the relaunch, such as links to pages, documents and images.”

While some URLs will change, the agency said that users who search for those pages or try to navigate to them from bookmarks will be redirected to the new location. The main website address will still remain www.ema.europa.eu.

The December revamp isn’t the only major change coming to the site. EMA said it plans to continue updating the website in 2024, with new features, such as an improved content subscription service and site-wide search.
