MHRA Launches Research Service to Provide More Clinical Research Data to Industry

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced today (29 March) it is launching a new clinical data research service to allow health researchers-including industry-to better access anonymized National Health Service (NHS) data to help spur research.

The initiative, known at the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) is being billed by MHRA as a "world-class e-health secure research service" that will be supported by MHRA and the Department of Health's (DOH) National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). NIHR has been piloting the program for the last four years.

"This collaborative approach will be at the forefront of delivering a world-class health research service by allowing life science researchers to draw on the power of large linked anonymized data sets on an unprecedented scale," wrote MHRA in a statement. "It will also provide novel and powerful ways in which clinical trials can be undertaken."
